Satya Veda Samaj was started in 1992 with Michael George and his wife Sujamol, Abraham Paul, JacobT.J, Joy Varghese, Saramma Joseph, and Varghese T. moving to Kommu, Palakol Mandal, West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh. All of these individuals are still involved with the work. The population at the time was 600 people. When the team arrived child labor was rampant, people of the land lived in marshy huts made of leaves with extremely poor sanitation and improper clothing. The people survived on a very poor diet and had no proper transportation. The caste system was highly exploitative and people were living in abject poverty. The SVS team initiated a holistic approach to restoring the community including implementation of a sanitation system, the digging of the first well, and the initiation of the first effective education of the children. While ministering to the felt needs of the community, the team preached the good news of the gospel with hundreds responding to receive new life in Christ. Now, some 15 years later, the community has been transformed with over 40 people having traveled overseas to find their livelihood, the lifestyle dramatically changed through development of sanitation, education, and social action and the heart of the community changed by the gospel. From this initial three year assignment, the team has moved on to produce leadership to bring the same holistic approach to 175 villages throughout Andhra Pradesh. We have ministered to people of every caste and language and envision bringing life to rural millions throughout central and northern India by the power of Jesus Christ. In addition, a ministry to the Middle East has produced a functioning network of underground home churches.
